Maha Yahya is the director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. Her work has focused broadly on political violence and identity politics, pluralism, development and social justice after the Arab uprisings, the challenges of citizenship, and the political and socio-economic implications of the migration/refugee crisis. Diwan sat with Yahya in early December to ask her about the implications of the recent decision of the Trump administration to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which provoked a strong backlash in the Arab and Muslim worlds.
