Carnegie’s Dalia Ghanem spoke to Radio Sputnik on the ongoing protests in Algeria. Ghanem noted that the determination of the Algerian people in pursuing the protests is particularly striking, especially its cross-generational nature. Ghanem stressed that even the older generation is expressing its frustrations with the current regime. Ghanem added that the Algerian regime will not be capable of buying social peace as it did in 2012. As for the announcement of Bouteflika to amend the constitution, Ghanem explained that these are only promises and are merely a tool to appease the population.
